3. Trims your waistline

Walking is a great form of physical activity that can help you maintain a healthy weight. Belly fat has been linked to a higher risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes, but moderately walking for at least 30 minutes every day can help you burn calories that would otherwise become excess fat if you were sedentary. It also helps you preserve lean muscle tissue and prevents age related muscle loss.

Walking for 50 to 70 minutes thrice a week can reduce your waist circumference by 2.8 cm and reduce body fat by 1.5%.

Walking is an effective form of exercise. As an added advantage, it is free! All you need is a good pair of running shoes and you are good to go. The most attractive thing about walking as a form of exercise is that you can do it as a leisure activity too.

Always remember to hydrate, use the right technique by ensuring that your posture is straight and your hands move freely, and most importantly, ensure that you have fun!

Why is walking one of the best exercise?

Here are 3 reasons.

2. Improved physical health

One of the main reasons why people exercise is to achieve physical fitness. Moderate walking on a regular basis reduces the risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, joint and muscular pain or stiffness, and other chronic illnesses.

Walking is a great cardio workout that works your large muscles and forces your heart and lungs to work hard. This makes your heart stronger and more efficient, and increases your lung capacity.

When your cardiac health improves, your blood pressure becomes balanced and bad cholesterol is reduced. Beyond cardiac health, walking also improves your balance, strengthens your bones and increases muscle strength and endurance.

Life in these modern times is indeed hectic, whether you are a student, working professional, or even a family person. Some of us might even be juggling with various responsibilities, working and studying, having a full time job and a side hustle, raising a family and having a full time job, having a full time job and taking care of elderly parents, or even raising a family, having a full time job and having a side hustle at the same time.

More often than not, we know that exercising is critical, to keep ourselves healthy and to prevent heath related problems.

But we just do not know what type of exercise to take part in. Some exercises seem difficult, some are simply tough and some even require special equipments.

Have you always wanted to start exercising but do not know which type of exercise to start with?

Try walking!

For most people, walking is more of a leisure activity than a real exercise. As simple as putting one foot in front of the other seems, walking is as good a workout as running, even though running is more physically demanding. According to various studies, daily moderate walking has been proven to reduce the risk of stroke in both men and women, significantly reduce hospital visits, and lower the risk of death from health conditions by up to 39%. Here are the top three reasons why walking is one of the best exercises:

1. Improved mental health

Most people exercise in order to be fit and healthy, but mental health, just like physical fitness, is an important aspect of wellness. Walking has been proven to have huge mental benefits.

• Increased creative output: a study from Stanford University found that walking increases creative output by up to 60%. This type of creativity is referred to as divergent thinking; a thought process used to generate creative ideas by exploring various solutions. Walking is very effective in opening up the free flow of ideas.

• Relieving the symptoms of anxiety: various psychologists have revealed that a 10-minute walk can increase self-confidence, vigour, attentiveness, and boost your mood. Walking in nature diverts your thoughts from negative experiences, therefore relieving the symptoms of anxiety and reducing the risk of depression.

• Prevents the deterioration of brain tissue: as we age, we become more susceptible to degenerative brain diseases such as Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease. Walking is a great way to slow down the aging process and reduce the risk of acquiring these diseases. This is attributed to the fact that walking boosts brain activity and ensures that your brain functions optimally. As a result, you get more energy, your memory improves, and you have better focus.
